Small-Space Decisions, Explained

Short, practical answers to the questions renters and small-home residents ask most. Measurements are typical guides — your own tape measure and building rules always have the final say.

Space and layout

How much room does a small table and two chairs need?

A 60 cm round table with two folding chairs usually needs about 150 × 120 cm with the chairs pulled out, plus a clear route past them. See compact seating.

Folding or stacking chairs: which saves more space?

Folding chairs save more floor when stored flat — often 8–10 cm deep. Stacking chairs keep a full seat footprint but are sturdier and quicker to set out. See folding pieces.

What is a sensible minimum walking route?

About 60 cm is a working minimum for one adult; allow more for mobility aids, children or building access requirements.

Building rules and safety

How do I know if my balcony can take a heavy bench or planters?

You cannot judge strength from floor area or appearance. Ask your landlord or building management for load guidance before adding heavy items such as soil-filled planters or full storage benches.

Can I drill into the wall or hang planters on the railing?

Only if your lease and building rules allow it. Many rentals restrict drilling, railing fixings and anything visible from outside.

How do I stop light furniture blowing over?

Fold and store light pieces when wind is forecast, keep loose items away from the railing and follow the maker's securing advice.

Materials and storage

Which materials cope with an exposed balcony?

Powder-coated aluminium, stainless-steel fittings and oiled hardwoods such as teak or acacia are common choices. Check hinges and fixings most closely — they fail first.

Where should folded furniture go in winter?

Indoors if you have a measured space for it; otherwise flat against the wall under a breathable cover, clear of the drain and door arc.

Can I lay decking tiles or an outdoor rug?

Often yes, but check building rules, keep the drain accessible and make sure water can still run off underneath.

Do you design layouts for my balcony?

No. We publish general guides. You can send a question, but we do not offer an automated or personal layout design service.
